Oswestry Midnight Ride 2019
For me, one of the highlights of spending time in the UK in June is being able to take part in the Oswestry Midnight Ride. Last year was my first time and I couldn’t wait for this year. As expected, this year was even better still, with some 120 riders taking part.
It was different to last year in respect that it started from AICO in the Industrial Estate at 18:30 hrs (as opposed to setting off at midnight) and as riders we had the chance to watch the sunset while cycling through beautiful Mid Wales.
The weather was absolutely perfect for it, dry and relatively warm.
Midnight Ride 2019 Route
The carefully planned and well signposted route took us through some of the most scenic locations the area has to offer. From Oswestry we headed to Weston Rhyn, then along the Ceiriog Valley, Llanarmon, Llanrhaeadr, Lake Vyrnwy, Llansantffraid, Llanymynech, Maesbury and then back to AICO. Some of the climbs were challenging, as where some of the descents. The briefing before starting and marshalling throughout the route ensured we were safe at all times and warned of any potential dangers, especially in some of the sectors. Arriving in Lake Vyrnwy at sunset was awesome, riding around the lake trying to get to the food stop before dark was fun. The food stop was great, I had to use all my willpower not to have an extra brownie!!
The total route was slightly shorter than last year, a tad over 116 km, which I completed in 4:19 hours and back at the start well before midnight, were a lovely buffet awaited us!
